Rolling Out the Flower Carpet: Explore Bradford District in Bloom

This autumn, Bradford will host the UK's first Flower Carpet, bringing a world-renowned floral tradition to the heart of the city.

A regular event in Belgium since the 1970s, Flower Carpets are celebrated for their intricate designs created using thousands of flowers. Inspired by this long-standing tradition, Bradford's Flower Carpet will be created live in Centenary Square from 24-27 September, set against the striking backdrop of Bradford City Hall.

Made using more than 300,000 dahlia flower heads, the installation will transform the square into a spectacular display of colour and creativity, offering visitors a chance to experience a globally recognised floral art form without leaving the UK.

But the flowers don't stop there. From Ilkley's floral trails to David Hockney's flower-inspired artworks in UNESCO World Heritage Site Saltaire and rare orchid collections in Keighley, Bradford district is blooming with flower-themed days out this autumn.

Enjoy Autumn Landscapes and Art

Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Ilkley, with its mix of riverside walks, colourful gardens and far-reaching moorland views. Take a stroll through Darwin Gardens and Riverside Gardens, where changing foliage and late-season colour create a picturesque setting for an autumn day out.

While you're there, visit Wharfespeed at Ilkley Manor House (weekends only). This immersive exhibition by artist Anji Timlin features dramatic large-scale paintings inspired by the River Wharfe and forms part of a wider celebration of the river and the communities connected to it. It offers a striking artistic perspective on one of the district's most iconic natural landscapes.

If flowers inspire your creativity

The Flower Carpet isn't the only floral artwork on display this autumn.

At Salts Mill in Saltaire, 20 Flowers For 2025 And Some Bigger Pictures brings together a series of flower paintings created on an iPad, alongside larger works. Together, the Flower Carpet and Hockney's exhibition show how flowers can inspire art in very different ways.

For another creative interpretation of nature, head to South Square Centre in Thornton, where flowers take on a more unexpected form. Running from 11 September to 1 November, Mutations in Bloom and Ruff by ceramic artist Patti Smith is on display at Plenty at the Square. The exhibition features sculptural flower-inspired ceramic works exploring themes of nature, industry and environmental change, with blooms transformed into imaginative and sometimes surreal forms.

You can take the experience a step further at The Art of Eating on 9 October, a unique food-and-art event inspired by Patti Smith's exhibition. Guests can enjoy a specially created four-course vegetarian and vegan menu designed by the team at Plenty at the Square, with each course drawing on the colours, themes and shapes found in the artworks. The evening also includes the opportunity to hear directly from the artist about her creative practice and the stories behind the exhibition.

Later in the season, South Square presents Vespertine Garden (6 November 2026 to 28 February 2027), an immersive installation exploring the relationship between plants, wildlife and our changing environment through contemporary art. It offers a thought-provoking contrast to the floral displays and garden traditions found elsewhere across the district.

At Cliffe Castle Museum in Keighley, Lady's Slipper and Bees: Pressed Orchids and Their Collectors offers a fascinating look at rare orchid specimens and the stories of the collectors who preserved them.

Seeing all those flowers might inspire you to make something yourself.

An Autumn Floral Vase Workshop at Salts Mill on 15 October and an Autumn Wreath Workshop in Saltaire on 16 October offer the chance to work with seasonal flowers and foliage and leave with something you've created.

You can also try something different at the Heritage Craft Room at Bradford Industrial Museum on 18 October, where the Mosaic Garden Slate Workshop gives participants the opportunity to create a decorative mosaic using traditional craft techniques.

For practical inspiration rather than displays, head to East Riddlesden Hall in Keighley this autumn. The Apple Festival on Saturday 26th September celebrates the orchard harvest with seasonal activities and family-friendly fun, while the Gardening Talk on Wednesday 21st October offers expert advice and ideas to take home to your own garden. Together, they make a great addition to an autumn day out, combining seasonal colour, gardening inspiration and the beauty of this historic National Trust property.

Autumn is also a great time to explore the district's Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces. From the colourful Mughal Water Garden and botanical gardens at Lister Park to Darwin Gardens in Ilkley, Central Park in Haworth and Roberts Park in Saltaire, you'll find seasonal colour, changing foliage and plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy an autumn walk.
