Saltaire, founded by Sir Titus Salt (1803–1876), takes its name from both its creator and the River Aire. A successful textile manufacturer, Salt moved his business and workers from polluted Bradford to a purpose-built village designed by Henry Lockwood and Richard Mawson. Salts Mill, completed in 1853, marked the start of an innovative industrial and social community.
After Salts Mill closed in 1986, Jonathan Silver, an entrepreneur and art lover, revitalised it, transforming the space into a cultural hub. He opened a David Hockney gallery and introduced Salts Diner, independent shops, and creative spaces. Saltaire was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001, recognised for its global impact on urban planning. Visitors can explore its history on a guided walk with Toothill Tours.
