Victoria Hall, Saltaire

About

Walt Strony is one of America's most celebrated concert organists, and we are delighted to welcome him across the Atlantic for our July concert at the Victoria Hall, Saltaire on Sunday 12th July at 2.30pm. Born in Chicago in 1955, he began music lessons at the age of seven and made his public debut in 1974 at just eighteen. Over fifty years on, he shows absolutely no sign of stopping.

His training placed him in rare company. His theatre organ teacher was Al Melgard, the legendary Staff Organist at the Chicago Stadium, who had himself played for the silent films of the 1920s. That direct line of musical heritage runs through everything Walt plays, giving his performances a depth and authenticity that is increasingly hard to find.

He has performed hundreds of concerts across the United States and internationally, including two appearances at Radio City Music Hall in New York and twice on the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia, the largest fully operational pipe organ in the world. The American Theatre Organ Society has twice named him Organist of the Year, in 1991 and 1993, making him the only living organist to have received that honour more than once. He is also a member of the ATOS Hall of Fame.

Concerts of this calibre do not come to Saltaire every day. If you have been thinking about coming along, this is the one not to miss, as it will be an outstanding musical event!

Refreshments will be available for a donation, plus displays and pre-owned recordings, and an opportunity to go below stage, to see the chambers containing nearly 1000 pipes and percussions.

There is level access from Lockwood Street via a lift and Saltaire railway station is only a few minutes’ walk from the hall.
