Essence of Django

About

Presenting Essence Of Django! A vibrant celebration of gypsy jazz and swing, featuring some of the region’s most exciting and expressive musicians. Drawing inspiration from the legendary sounds of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, the band delivers music steeped in tradition while fearlessly pushing the genre into a modern context.

Audiences can expect fiery, virtuosic solos, foot-stomping rhythms, burning ballads, and moments of delicate lyricism, alongside the occasional Latin-inspired piece that adds colour and surprise. Essence Of Django stays true to the spirit, energy, and spontaneity of Django and Stéphane, while carving out a fresh and contemporary voice within the world of gypsy jazz.

The group was formed after meeting at the Django in the Bay Festival 2023, where a shared love of the music, an instant musical chemistry, and late-night jam sessions sparked the idea for a new project. What began as a festival connection quickly grew into a focused collaboration, uniting musicians from different parts of the country around a single goal: to honour the legacy of Django Reinhardt while keeping the music alive, evolving, and relevant today.

Together, Essence Of Django delivers an exhilarating live experience. rooted in tradition, shaped by friendship, and fuelled by a shared passion for one of jazz’s most exciting and enduring styles.

Lewis Kilvington – Guitar

A fantastic soloist as well as a powerful rhythm guitarist, he combines melodic confidence with a strong sense of swing, contributing energy, clarity, and momentum to the band’s sound. He began playing guitar at the age of 14 before expanding his musicianship to bass guitar and trombone, giving him a broad and adaptable musical voice. Elliott completed a Bachelor’s degree in Music at Nottingham Trent University and is now an experienced performer across a wide range of settings, including jazz ensembles, orchestras, and professional touring productions. His versatility, musical sensitivity, and dynamic presence make him a vital part of the group.
