The National Science and Media Museum’s Pictureville Cinema will host a rare screening of Dr Akbar Ahmed’s acclaimed play Gandhi and Jinnah Return Home on Saturday 15th August.
The screening will be introduced by acclaimed author Dr Amineh Hoti and followed by a Q&A session hosted by Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, Founder and Chief Executive of QED Foundation. The play’s writer, Dr. Akbar Ahmed, and director Manjula Kumar will both join online.
Exploring the perspectives of Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi and Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Quaid-e-Azam) during the final years of British India, the play invites audiences to reflect on the shared philosophies of the two leaders through music and theatre. It explores themes of peace, mutual respect and coexistence, promoting shared harmony between Hindus and Muslims, as well as among people from all faiths across the subcontinent.
Taking place as Pakistan and India commemorate their respective Independence Days on 14 and 15 August, the screening is a timely opportunity to revisit a pivotal moment in the history of both nations and consider the enduring relevance of the play’s message.
This special screening event offers audiences the opportunity to experience the acclaimed production on the big screen and hear directly from its creator and director during the post-screening discussion.
This screening is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
Sally Folkard, Head of Screen and Cultural Engagement at the National Science and Media Museum commented: “This screening of Gandhi and Jinnah Return Home is a perfect example of the kind of unique cultural experience we're proud to bring to Bradford. We’re delighted to host this screening event at Pictureville Cinema and proud to provide a space where audiences can engage with these important stories and hear directly from the people who brought them to life.”
Tickets are available via the museum’s website.
