It’s been 179 years since Emily Brontë first published her acclaimed novel and set across the dramatic moorland and villages of the South Pennines, ‘Wuthering Heights’ remains a popular feature of the local tourism industry.
Specifically, the atmospheric town of Haworth needs no introduction to literary fans; the village was both home to the Brontë family and the inspiration for many of the locations in this classic work of Gothic fiction.
Here, you can visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of Brontë furniture, clothes and personal possessions, as well as the carefully preserved family home where the three sisters wrote their famous novels.
There are also stunning walks to ‘Top Withens’ (said to be the model for the Wuthering Heights farmhouse), Brontë waterfall, and the gritstone crag/Fairy Cave mentioned throughout the story.
The Keighley Bus Company operates three Brontëbus routes to Haworth (the Brontëbus B1, B2, and B3), running every 20 minutes Monday-Saturday, and every 30 minutes on Sunday (excluding the Brontëbus B1, which does not operate on Sundays).
And you can easily visit the home of Wuthering Heights from almost anywhere in Yorkshire, with connecting buses:
- From Leeds, Greengates and Shipley – Take Aireline 60, running every 20 minutes
- From Bradford and Saltaire – Take SHUTTLE 662, running every 15 minutes
- From Colne – Take Mainline M4, running every 30 minutes
- From Skipton – Take Dalesway 66, running every 30 minutes
- From Ilkley and Silsden – Take the 62, running every 30 minutes
- From Halifax – Take Great Northern Line 502, running hourly
Tickets in West Yorkshire cost only £2.50 each way, and no more than £3 each way further afield.
Planning to visit with family or friends? The Yorkshire 1 Duo ticket for two people is priced at £12, while Group tickets for up to five people cost £16 – leaving you plenty of spare change to enjoy what else Haworth’s cobbled roads have to offer.
Project and Marketing Manager Matt Burley said: “We’re incredibly proud of our Brontëbus services, and it’s amazing to see so many customers heading to Haworth to learn more about the Brontë family, especially now that the new movie is out.
“Brontë Country is such a beautiful place, and with such a stunning location – steeped in literary history – on our doorstep, we’re reminded of the importance of accessible public transport. We look forward to seeing you on our Brontëbus routes soon!”
