Feminist and gay icon Jane Cholmeley will be visiting Haworth’s Independent Bookshop Wave of Nostalgia to launch a Bookshop of One’s Own - her story of the Silver Moon Bookshop, the UK’s first feminist and gay bookshop.

At 7PM on Thursday, 14th March she will be signing books and telling the story of what it was like to start a feminist bookshop in Thatcher’s Britain in an industry dominated by men.

Founded in 1980s London against a backdrop of homophobia and misogyny, it was a testament to the power of community, growing into Europe’s biggest women’s bookshop and hosting a constellation of literary stars from Margaret Atwood and Maya Angelou to Angela Carter.

Wave of Nostalgia, finalist in the regional Independent Bookshop of the Year, loves to champion strong women. Owner Diane Park is really looking forward to welcoming Jane to Haworth. She says “Jane played a crucial and relatively unsung part in one the biggest social movements of our time and A Bookshop Of One’s Own is a fascinating slice of social history from the heart of the women’s liberation movement. It will be great to find out how she not only overcame the normal challenges of starting up a bookshop but also the additional burdens of misogyny and the occasional hate crime, to create an incredible business”

She adds “For anyone who can’t make it to Haworth for the event, we will also be sharing the event on Zoom”

Jane Cholmeley will be answering questions on and signing copies of A Bookshop of One’s Own at 7PM on Thursday 14th March 2024 at Wave of Nostalgia, 74 Main Street, Haworth BD22 8DP
