About
Come and join us at Victoria Hall, Saltaire for our May Wurlitzer Organ concert with organist Nicholas Martin.
Nicholas Martin BEM, is a theatre organist with a career spanning more than four decades, whose playing has taken him to some of the most celebrated venues in the country. He first encountered the organ as a boy during a family visit to Blackpool, where hearing Reginald Dixon play the Tower Ballroom Wurlitzer set him on a path he has never left.
In 1981, aged just seventeen, he became one of the youngest resident organists ever to play the Wurlitzer at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Two years later he was appointed resident organist at Turner's Musical Merry-Go-Round in Northampton, where he spent over twenty years playing the former Paramount Newcastle Wurlitzer and recording a string of popular albums. A familiar voice on BBC Radio 2's The Organist Entertains, he has delighted audiences across the country with a programme that is as entertaining as it is musically accomplished.
Away from the keyboard, Nicholas and his wife Marianne founded the charity Miracles to Believe In in 2001, which supports children and families affected by autism, and it was for this work that he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen's New Year Honours in 2014.
Whether you are a lifelong devotee of the theatre organ or simply looking for a wonderful Sunday afternoon out, this is a concert not to be missed. Nicholas brings warmth, humour and real showmanship to everything he plays, and an afternoon in his company is guaranteed to leave you smiling. Refreshments available, under stage tours to see the organ pipes and percussions, level access from Lockwood Street.
