About

Yorkshire artist and trained architect Matthew Eyles has developed this exhibition in response to East Riddlesden Hall and its surrounding landscape. Working primarily in acrylic ink and watercolour, alongside fineline ink pen, coloured pencil, graphite, and charcoal, he explores the quieter thresholds within a place, where architecture and landscape meet, where interiors open onto gardens, and where light, weather and season alter the character of familiar spaces. East Riddlesden Hall is particularly compelling because both the house and its grounds have survived within an increasingly urban setting. Together they form a rare fragment of historic landscape, shaped by centuries of use and change, and by the memories we bring to it. Through repeated visits to the Hall over the course of the year, sketching and working on site as Artist in Residence, Matthew has explored not simply how the place looks, but how it feels to spend time here.
