About

Thornton bursts into bloom as residents open their gardens to the public—ranging from charming hillside terraces to the flourishing, community-led Sapgate Garden. As part of the weekend, South Square Centre joins in by opening its garden and hosting a range of engaging activities.

Saturday Activities at South Square:

Poetry Workshop with Emma Conally Barklem 10:30am – 12:30pm | Garden A free, bookable workshop exploring the theme ‘People Come Together’ through creative writing, drawing on archive photographs and South Square’s history. Led by published poet Emma Conally Barklem. Booking essential.

Paint a Plant Pot – Drop-in Workshop 10am – 3pm | Garden Come along and decorate your own plant pot using paint pens and local horticultural inspiration. All materials provided. £4 per pot. Suitable for all ages.

Embossing Workshop with Kelvin (Bradford 2025 Young Creative) 11am – 3pm | Courtyard Drop in and try metal embossing with copper and aluminium sheets. Whether it’s a garden label, keepsake, or an introduction to a new hobby, all are welcome. For ages 6 and over. Children must be supervised.

How to Speak Hip – DJ Set From 4pm | Garden An evening of jazz, reggae, soul, and eclectic grooves from local DJs. Drinks available at The Watchmaker bar. Relax or dance the evening away in good company.

Sunday will include open gardens throughout the village and continued access to the South Square garden and gallery, which features the exhibition Yorkshire Pudding and Pickled Cabbage by Alicja Mrozowska.
