Great white shark approaching a swimmer beneath the ocean surface.

About

The original summer blockbuster and one of cinema’s defining thrillers, Jaws remains a masterclass in suspense filmmaking and introduced the world the world to a filmmaker like no other.

When a seaside town is terrorised by a great white shark, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) set out to destroy the creature before it strikes again. What begins as a contained local crisis steadily expands into a struggle between man and nature, staged by Spielberg with remarkable restraint and escalating tension. The famously troubled mechanical shark forced the director into a more suggestive approach, resulting in a film that relies on implication, performance and John Williams’ iconic two-note motif to generate its sustained sense of dread.

A huge critical and commercial success on release, Jaws was widely credited with inventing the modern summer blockbuster. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning three, and is frequently cited in critical polls as one of the greatest films ever made, praised for its economy of storytelling, character-driven tension, and groundbreaking use of sound and editing.
