An old black and white photograph of Ilkley Grammar School

About

A guided walk in the centre of Ilkley looking at the work of these local builders from 1860s to 1940s. We shall be able to go inside All Saints Church and see other public buildings houses and shops that they worked on.

The Dean brothers - often known as Isaac and Thomas - come into Ilkley by 1860 to work on the extension to All Saints Church and build the Crescent Hotel. After the land sales begin in 1867 they are able to build business and terrace houses, including a pair for themselves. By 1885 they are building a steam laundry and Ilkley's first indoor swimming pool. In 1890s they build the new Ilkley Grammar School and a covered shopping arcade and elegant shops on the new shopping street - The Grove.
