About
Walk with Nancy de Garrs, nursemaid and housekeeper at Thornton and Haworth to discover places the Brontës visited in the town. Beginning at Local Studies in Keighley’s Carnegie Library, the walk will explore stories of Patrick, Charlotte, Emily, Ann and Branwell highlighting where they experienced and enjoyed art, music, literature, travel and funfairs. Discover places they came often to look for books, to teach or listen to lectures, hear music, learn to draw and paint, visit friends, enjoy the annual fair - and more. Nancy outlived the family and knew them well, especially in the children's formative years, staying in touch with Charlotte and Patrick throughout their lives. After seeing Keighley through Brontë eyes, the walk will head back to Local Studies for refreshments and a chance to look at the Brontë archive housed in the first Carnegie Library in England.
Led by Irene Loftjouse writer/actor, cultural historian who has been channeling her inner Nancy de Garrs for over a decade, visiting schools to tell Brontë tales, at Undercliffe Cemetery where Nancy is buried, and on the inaugural Town Trail walk.
There are a maximum of 15 places; the walk is suitable for 12+ and children must be accompanied by an adults.
