About

Undercliffe cemetery was opened in 1854 by the Bradford Cemetery Company. William Gay (1814-1893) created the beautiful layout of the cemetery, with the grandeur of its main boulevard and ‘historic core’, and sweeping views over Bradford from the west end. The 25-acre site, high above the city, contains many grand nineteenth-century monuments: tombs fit for pharaohs, finely decorated obelisks, extravagant mausoleums and huge columns abound. The six listed monuments, amongst others, have QR codes so that you can find out more about who they commemorate with a click of your smart phone.

Many of the rich and famous and notable inhabitants of Bradford have been buried here, along with veterans of famous conflicts such as Waterloo, the Crimea and World War 1, and many ordinary but no less interesting citizens.

Undercliffe Cemetery has been designated a conservation area by Bradford Council, and has also been recognised nationally by English Heritage. The cemetery is included in their Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest and was awarded Grade ll* listed status in 1998. In the wilder areas of the cemetery, nature has been allowed to take over and flora and fauna have flourished. We ask visitors to stay on the main pathways as the terrain is uneven.
