Alan Titchmarsh grew up in Ilkley and is best known as a gardener, writer, novelist, and broadcaster. He is also an accomplished concert presenter, frequently at the Royal Albert Hall. For four years he hosted the BBC Proms and works with both the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet as guest narrator and presenter. In 2014, Alan made his West End theatre debut as the on-stage narrator Kenneth Grahame in The Royal Ballet’s production of The Wind in the Willows and in 2019 sang ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ on the stage of the London Palladium in All-Star Musicals, earning – to his astonishment - top marks from the judges.

His own writings, collected in the book Fill My Stocking, have been used in various presentations including Carols from Kings and With Great Pleasure and read by well-known performers such as Eddie Redmayne and Gyles Brandreth.

On television, since the glory days of Ground Force, he has presented such diverse programmes as British Isles a Natural History, Pop Star to Opera Star, Elizabeth - Her Life, Our Times, and ten series of Love Your Garden have appeared on ITV. He currently presents Love Your Weekend on ITV on Sunday mornings and has a regular Saturday morning Show on Classic FM when he gets a chance to play the music he loves best.

When not doing this sort of thing, he is still happy gardening, helping to juggle four grandchildren, enjoying stage musicals, most theatre, ballet, and opera.

Ilkley Playhouse has been privileged on several occasions that Alan has returned to his roots, and we have been able to welcome our Patron to our theatre. Alan has been a long-standing supporter of the Playhouse, having received encouragement in 1963 from his schoolteacher David Wildman, who was also our Artistic Director, to join the Playhouse aged fourteen.

Alan is looking forward to being back. He says: “I still cherish my association with the Players, and I do hope it will continue for many years.”

There will be an opportunity for a Q&A session towards the end of the evening.
