About
In the week of her 90th birthday, Widescreen Weekend is proud to celebrate the life and career of legendary British actress Dame Julie Andrews.
Through her Academy Award-winning debut in Mary Poppins (1964), Dame Julie instantly became a Hollywood favourite. She consolidated her iconic status with the unprecedented success of The Sound of Music (1965) and went on to make further musicals (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and big screen epics (Hawaii). Her marriage to director Blake Edwards led to a partnership that covered films across a range of genres, but the decline in the popularity of the musical caused challenges in her career.
Widescreen Weekend offers audiences the chance to explore three of the movies she made to respond to the fixed images audiences had of her. From a Hitchcock thriller to a psychological drama about disability, these films show Andrews’s range as a performer beyond The Sound of Music.
