About
Experience the BFI National Archive’s restoration of three silent-era Sherlock Holmes films, screened with live musical accompaniment by Neil Brand and Jeff Davenport. These rarely seen episodes—A Scandal in Bohemia, The Golden Pince-Nez, and The Final Problem—feature Eille Norwood, the most prolific Holmes in film history, in performances once praised by Conan Doyle himself.
This marks the first public screening since the world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in 2024. The programme includes an introduction by Bryony Dixon, Curator of Silent Film at the BFI National Archive.
Restored using advanced photochemical and digital techniques, the films are part of a major project to preserve the Stoll film collection, held uniquely by the BFI since 1938. The restoration was funded by Iron Mountain.
Directors: Maurice Elvey, George Ridgwell Cast: Eille Norwood, Hubert Willis, Madame d’Esterre Language: English (silent with intertitles)
Supported by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, National Science and Media Museum, and the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding.
