A drawing of a tree

About

Following on from the success of Unit 9’s group show, ‘All About Bradford’, Unit 9 artist Kate Stewart presents a solo exhibition with a focus on one of Bradford’s jewels, Lister Park.

Kate Stewart says:

“Created at the height of Bradford’s prosperity and confidence, Lister Park has

had its ups and downs but is now beautifully maintained and gardened, extremely well used and on my doorstep. I have made work about the park before because I spend a lot of time there, but this year I wanted to try and capture something of the feel of the place, a place to walk among trees.

I have been helped in this endeavour by attending a class with Jake Attree, another of Bradford’s jewels. Jake is the first art teacher I have had since I left school — I have always felt too arrogant or too frightened to become a pupil in art (not in other areas) and I have really found the experience absorbing and changing.

Amongst the things I have learnt from him are the centrality of drawing and persistence. Jake draws all the time, and I have tried to follow and am showing some of the drawings I did as preparations for the two larger watercolours. He has also helped me to move towards abstraction, whilst, as it were, keeping my feet on the figurative ground.”
