Set in the 1980's in Liverpool, Rita, a young hairdresser, seeks to break away from her working-class roots and pursue an education. She enrols in an Open University course and is assigned to Frank, a jaded and alcoholic English literature professor, as her tutor. As Rita's education progresses, she faces challenges that force her to confront her own identity and the expectations of those around her.
