About
Celebrate with us at one of our iconic 'wonders of the waterways' as Yorkshire’s Bingley Five Rise Locks celebrates its 250th anniversary.
Join us for a family-friendly day out on Saturday 23 March, as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of Bingley Five Rise Locks and Bingley Three Rise Locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
Discover what makes Bingley Five Rise Locks one of the seven ‘wonders of the waterways’ with a special day of activities running throughout the day, from town to towpath.
Explore how the locks have been used for more than two centuries, from 1774 until 2024. Discover the modern-day challenges of preserving and maintaining these remarkable feats of engineering - and the many ways you can enjoy them today.
Meet the experts that care for the locks and the canal, find out how you can get involved yourself, and support the Canal & River Trust waterways charity.
This is a drop-in event running from 10am to 3pm, with the activities described below running throughout the day.
Highlights include:
Seeing the ‘UK’s steepest staircase locks’ in action
Lock keeper demonstrations and talks by volunteers
Boat trips along the canal

Soak up stunning views of the Aire Valley at the top of the flight, pop into the Five Rise Locks Café for refreshments, or walk towards Bingley Three Rise Locks and make your way to Damart Café (next to the canal) to enjoy a special pop-up arts programme featuring talks, weaving display and demonstrations, plus poetry readings by Canal Laureate Roy McFarlane. Bingley Town Council will be hosting an artisan market in Bingley town centre, with live music and performances.
