About
Step into the rhythm of West African poetry, a space where words carry history, pride, and power.
Together we’ll journey through the voices of poets who shaped the Negritude movement (a powerful literary and cultural movement of the 1930s that celebrated Black identity, heritage, and resistance to colonial rule).
Tony Tokunbo Fernandez will perform 2 of his poems which are woven with Pan-Africanist themes and imagery, opening conversations about language, culture, and community. Then he will guide you through the creation of your own poetry drawing on West African poetry and its uses of metaphor and style to reflect the spirit, values, and stories of its people.
Participants must be able to read and write confidently. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Suitable for ages 10+
