Two people wearing headphones sit closely together in a dimly lit radio studio, speaking into a microphone illuminated by warm orange light.

About

Isaac Julien’s iconic, beautifully crafted 1991 period piece was a landmark for Black and queer British film.

A convincing picture of late 70s London, youth culture meets identity politics in this part-thriller, part-gay love story set days before the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations. The hedonistic world of pirate DJs Chris and Caz is shattered when a close friend is killed while cruising in the local park. The black community suspect the National Front, but the police have other ideas.

  • Director: Isaac Julien
  • Cast: Sophie Okonedo, Frances Barber, Dorian Healy

The 2026 BFI FAN UK-wide season, Rip It Up, explores and celebrates the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression – from joy to heartbreak – on screen in the UK.
