Revd George Stringer Bull was the Minister of St John the Evangelist Church in Bierley from 1826 to 1839. During this time he became affectionately known as Parson Bull. Shocked at the terrible living and working conditions in this and his previous Parrish, he became an active reformer. With notable political figures, Oastler, Sadler and Fielden he pressed for the introduction of a limit of a 10 hour working day for children.
Visit this 18th Century Church, designed by John Carr of York. Note its unusual architectural features, the Hillas Memorial Organ built by Messrs Norman and Beard of Norwich and London and hear of the escapade of the stolen paintings. Most importantly learn about parson Bull and his reforming zeal.
