Bradford's Trapezium Gallery is pleased to present The Mystique Within The Mundane, an exhibition of sculpture and photography by Abraham Emajaro.
Ken Woods of Trapezium says: “We think people will love Abraham’s sculptural objects. They are quirky and thought-provoking and a real divergence from the work we usually show.”
Abraham is a British Nigerian, born in Bradford in 1961 and has been a self taught professional multi-media artist since the early 1980s. His practice draws inspiration from his West African heritage and he has exhibited widely both in this country and abroad.
He employs a signature style of surrealism throughout his work, creating an array of visual art that explores the subconscious and the hidden recesses of the mind, such as the hidden symbolism within dreams. Influences include Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauschenberg, Bill Brandt and Lee Miller.
Found objects play a huge role in his creative process. He says, “I passionately collect an eclectic mix of domestic and commercial junk and produce an array of box construction, sculpture, and assemblage, influenced by subjects such as ritual, mythology, iconography and memory.”
In this retrospective, Abraham will also be showcasing a selection of new works. One piece, entitled "Sparrow Haven Mask'' measures over 6ft high. He says, “It's a reimagined African tribal mask totem, constructed using old, reclaimed church organ pipes, made of cedar wood, dating back to 1901. They were destined for landfill, before I rescued them.”
Also on display are a series of photographic prints, which include his passion for architecture and urban street photography. They express his keen interest in the realms of surrealism, and depict his experimental approach.
There will be refreshments and a chance to meet the artist at the launch event on Saturday 26th July 12-3pm.
