A bird sculpture

About

Taking its cue from the mythical creature, this ten-metre Phenix lights up the night with a call for hope, strength and power in the face of adverstity. With a soundtrack produced by Francois Gauriaud, we are transported to French Guyana where the sound of bird calls is overpowered by the destructive sound of machinery facilitating gold panning.

Gold mining is an ecological scourge in French Guyana: environmentally speaking, gold mining leads to deforestation and pollution of soils and waterways. It takes about 1 kg of TNT, 1 Kg of mercury to produce 1 kg of gold.
