Crowd of soldiers wearing steel helmets and military uniforms gathered closely together outdoors during a wartime scene.

About

Christopher Nolan’s precise war epic as allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces; troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. Christopher Nolan brings this pivotal moment to the screen through an incredibly immersive and propulsive experience, rather than relying on exposition, backstories, or traditional dialogue, the film functions as an intense survival thriller. Utilising breathtaking cinematography, sound design, and a unique structure to make audiences feel the visceral panic and claustrophobia of the battle as told from the ground, sea and air.

Considered one of Nolan’s more understated films, he and longtime cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the majority of the film using 15-perf/70mm IMAX film. This, alongside its performances, sound, structure, and soundtrack make for an essential IMAX experience.
