The Arrival of Spring at Salts Mill

Bradford District offers a variety of artistic experiences where you can see the work of big names in the visual arts world as well as the work of the thriving local scene.  This city is the birthplace of famous artist David Hockney and we are proud of our cultural heritage.  Follow this creative Itinerary designed for art lovers of the past and contemporary art.

There are a variety of accommodation options to choose from when planning your visit to Bradford. If you prefer a more traditional experience, you can opt for hotels, guesthouses or B&Bs. However, if you prefer more independence, holiday lodges and serviced apartments are a good choice.

Day One

Start your journey in Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore this outstanding example of a model Victorian village.  If you visit in May, you can follow the Saltaire Arts Trail, where local residents turn their homes into art galleries showcasing Yorkshire's finest art and crafts.  Visit Salts Mill, which houses a vast collection of David Hockney's art. On the third floor, you can see 'The Arrival of Spring,' a series of original works created by Hockney on his iPad in 2011 and printed in a remarkable size.

After lunch, visit Bradford's civic art gallery, Cartwright Hall, in picturesque Lister Park, which has an exciting program of contemporary exhibitions and features works from the city's art collections, allowing you to immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the city.

Experience something different at TYRO Studios in Shipley where you can participate in a variety of workshops and events.  These include activities such as floral arranging, modern calligraphy, watercolour painting, macramé, and so much more.

Day Two

Take the time to explore the vibrant city of Bradford and visit Impressions Gallery, UK's leading independent photography venue, showcasing the best work by contemporary photographers from around the world.  Be captivated by the powerful and inspiring images and seek out the fascinating programme of talks and events where you can connect with other art enthusiasts and deepen your knowledge of photography.

Travel by bus to Thornton's South Square Centre.  It's a lively place for the arts, with galleries and artists' studios.  You can also learn more about Thornton's local history at the Thornton Antiquarian Society Archive.  As well as the art, there is a café called Plenty at the Square and a pub called The Watchmaker nearby ready to quench your thirst and provide a welcoming atmosphere in which to relax.

Enjoy the evening with the best live music at St George's Hall or a West End musical at the Alhambra Theatre.  With its friendly bars and some of the best Asian cuisine in the country, Bradford has just what you're looking for to end your perfect day.
