Widescreen Weekend 2022

A combination of short lightning talks and a panel discussion with guest experts to help you discover more about the world of cinema.

‘A sense of depth and realism’ was a phrase used to communicate the mystique of Cinerama at its inception. As something that nobody had experienced before, the format needed to jump out of the screen as the new, immersive medium it pledged to be.

Reclaiming this title, A Sense of Depth and Realism will explore immersive cinema from the birth of Cinerama in 1952 through to storytelling of the present and beyond that ‘puts you in the picture’.

Through four short lightning lectures followed by a brief panel discussion, our guests will explore the history and continuing practice of inviting the audience into the film and blurring the boundaries between media and reality.

Speakers in this year’s lecture series are:

David Strohmaier, Director of Restorations, Cinerama Inc.

Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, Cultural historian, writer and award-winning broadcaster

Charlie Shackleton, Filmmaker, The Afterlight

Caroline White, Business Development, Prox and Reverie

A brief panel discussion will follow the lectures hosted by Kathryn Penny, Director of Widescreen Weekend.
