Set It Off

About

A gripping heist thriller from 1996 that gives vital representation to Black women's friendship.

Set in Los Angeles, the film centres on four close-knit childhood friends (played by Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise) who turn to robbing banks out of desperation, fed up with their exploitative low-paying jobs and treatment as second-class citizens. Director F. Gary Gray, who honed his craft on music videos for the likes of Ice Cube, Dr Dre, OutKast and TLC, brings energy and urgency to his sophomore feature and elicits stellar performances from the cast.

Combining exhilarating action sequences, social commentary and emotive scenes of melodrama, Set It Off is a powerful and empathic depiction of female friendship and the struggles and lived experiences of working-class Black women in America.

This screening will be introduced by film programmer and academic Alice Miller.
