Matisse Inspired Paper Cut Workshop

About

Join artist and designer Justine Hardisty for a morning of creating abstract style art using cut paper and leave with a stunning and unique piece of art, interpreted and created by you! You will delve into the history and origins of abstract art, as well as the artists and art movements that, over time, have expressed themselves through shape, colour, texture and form. You will be particularly inspired by the cut paper designs of Henri Matisse, who began using this technique when failing health prevented him from standing at an easel to paint. Throughout the day you will learn valuable skills and techniques that we would love you continue to develop at home!

Your final piece will be created using cut paper to achieve the most amazing effect. There are endless possibilities when building an abstract composition of this nature which results in the production of an amazing and unique work of art.

In this introductory workshop Justine will use her 35 years’ experience of art and design study, training and art history knowledge to demonstrate how to plan and construct an abstract composition using cut paper. This will enable you to create a stunning abstract composition to adorn any wall in your home! Within the workshop you will be exposed to the abstract works of several artists and what their perception and interpretation of various subjects was.

Participants will be shown demonstrations and will have guided one-to-one help and advice on how to achieve the best results. You will also be provided with a handout on the day containing art history information and images of pieces of abstract art past and present. The handout also contains details of the techniques you have been shown to further develop what you have learned at home. The workshop will involve:

• Introduction to using cut paper/collage

• Looking at abstract artwork by different artists past and present using a range of styles and techniques

• Learning and experimenting with colours and scale

• Understanding how to build an abstract composition
