Jack Hellewell Exhibition.

Dreaming of the World – pictorial memoirs of a life well lived Jack Hellewell 1920-2000.

Born and raised in Bradford, Jack developed a passion for travel when he went to war in 1940, serving in Africa andItaly where he found he loved warm weather, vibrant colours and exotic women.

After the war he spent a restless few years back in England but hatched a plan to escape dreary Bradford. After considering the Scottish Highlands, a commune in Devon, Canada, New Zealand and Samoa he finally plumped for a£10 passage for his family to South Australia. The sea journey took them through the Suez Canal, their boat being the last passenger liner to sail through before the canal closed.

Jack discovered that the arid Antipodean grass certainly was not greener than that of God’s own county and decided to return to Yorkshire in 1969, this time sailing through the Panama Canal and calling at many other romantic locations.

On returning to Great Britain, Jack moved around regularly as a Commercial Artist and Visualiser. He returned to Yorkshire permanently in 1971 and began to produce the artwork you see today, from sketchbooks and memory. The exuberance of his work gives an insight into the fascinating mindscape of a quiet, introverted man who, after his wife
died in 1976, rarely left his studio and withdrew from the world.
