Rock against racism logo

About

Photographer Syd Shelton and Professor Carol Tulloch will discuss the vital role photography played in the Rock Against Racism movement (1976 to 1981), formed by musicians and political activists to fight racism through music.

Syd Shelton’s Rock Against Racism photographs captured a pivotal moment in British politics and culture, fashion and music. A selection of these images feature in our current exhibition Café Royal Books, serving as a timely reminder that, sadly, we still need to confront racist ideology.

Syd and Carol will consider how the invitation to be featured in the Café Royal series impacted how Syd views his work and archive, and how this influenced his recent retrospective publication Stills From Life.
