In conversation with Emily Itami: The Female Protagonist. Part of the Bronte Festival of Women's Writing.

How do you write a protagonist who doesn’t conform to expected narratives? Join host Kirran Shah as she talks to author Emily Itami about her novel ‘Fault Lines’. Shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award 2021, we’ll delve into how Emily’s debut novel approaches the female protagonist.

Emily’s novel explores the life and love of housewife Mizuki in contemporary Tokyo. Emily will share how she has written a protagonist who doesn’t conform to expected narratives, and discuss the writer and readers love for forbidden romance in fiction.

Emily Itami grew up in Tokyo before moving to London, where she now lives with her young family. She has been published widely as a freelance journalist and travel writer. Emily is interested in creating protagonists who subvert the traditional narrative.
