Bradford on Film This Wonderful Creation 1976 (Saltaire) 4 (c) YFA

About

This special event draws from a remarkable collection of archive films from the 20th century, preserved in the vaults of the Yorkshire Film Archive.

Whether you are a born and bred Bradfordian, or a newcomer to this great city, then don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this special screening, back at Pictureville by popular demand.

From early moving image pioneers to local filmmaking companies, amateur productions to regional television programmes, the event opens a window onto local communities and landmark events, as well as capturing the sights, sounds, faces, places, changing landscapes and industries, great events and everyday lives of people in Bradford.

Enjoy a journey through Bradford’s film heritage, beginning in 1896 with a bustling Town Hall Square, 1911 FA Cup success and celebrations for the Silver Jubilee of George V in 1935. Reflect on the how the city rallied during the war and rebuilt and regenerated afterwards, join the students on the annual RAG parade, and watch the heyday of the textile industry at Manningham Mill and much more.

Packed full of curated content, this presenter-led screening will shine a spotlight on local filmmakers like Eric Hall and Fred Dewhirst, and reveal the film legacies of influential businessman and councillor Bob Sharp and professional film company CH Wood Ltd who both recorded the changing face of the district. Highlights include a day out to Shipley Glen, Haworth and Saltaire, memories of Odsal, Kirkgate Market or the Blue Lace Nightclub and colourful local characters, including Mohamed Fazal Hussain, elder statesman and wannabe film mogul of Bradford's Muslim community. There really is something for everyone.
