About Time - Paintings By John Allcock

About

Time infuses our lives. We scan the future in hope or trepidation, and experience the past as reminiscence or loss. “Now” is rarely simply “now”. Our identity is coloured by history and memory, by expectation or aspiration. The complexity of our living in time is a recurring theme of John Allcock’s painting.

John Allcock’s artistic attention has ranged broadly, beginning with ancient stone circles. His pictorial reflections on T.S. Eliot’s meditation on time (his Four Quartets) are given an autobiographical context. In his Set Apart series his focus moves to the intersection of individual identity and community history, inspired by ancient hermitages in northern Spain. Travel in Italy results in an exploration of the part played by experience of war in the identity of a community in the Carnia region. A visit to Malta—a harsh environment in which people and vegetation endure—inspires his “Malta Suite”.

John Allcock lives in Bradford. His work in a variety of media has been exhibited widely, mainly in the North of England.
