Friends Of Ilkley Moor - Upland Management Practices

This event will explore the different management practices used to manage the uplands. We will look at the history of management in the uplands and current popular practices which include: vegetation burning, cutting, drainage, legal (& illegal) predator control, livestock grazing (mainly sheep) & managing the uplands for grouse shooting)

We will explore options for change. Are there different management practices? Ones which optimise the full breadth of the biodiversity which is part of an upland environment, are economically viable & which minimise the impact on the wider landscape? Impacts like flood management, carbon storage & archaeological preservation. We will look at the possibility of developing a research project to explore different options for managing the uplands & whether it is possible to apply these to Ilkley Moor.

Leader Tracy Gray. Booking Not Needed. The walk is easy to moderate but with some uphill climbing (but taken at a slow pace) toilets & seating area are available on this event. Dogs welcome on leads.
