In the mid 17th century civil war raged across the country and Bradford would not be spared. Indeed, having recently incurred the wrath of King Charles through sedition, the town was to receive particular attention from the warring monarch. In no mood to spare the town bloodshed, the King’s aim was to send a royalist army – under the command of the Earl of Newcastle – to take the town and mete out bloody justice. As a vastly superior army, what should have been an easy task for the earl’s men was, however, to become a battle for their own survival.
