About
Roberts Park was designed by William Gay and opened on 25 July 1871. Originally known as Saltaire Park, it was bequeathed by the Roberts family to Bradford Corporation in 1920 and subsequently renamed Roberts Park in memory of Sir James Roberts’ son.
Sir James Roberts was a local business man who took over the Salts textile empire. He also donated the statue, depicting Sir Titus Salt , prominent mill owner and founder of Saltaire village as it stands today. In 2001, Saltaire village, including Roberts Park, became inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The park, situated on the north side of the River Aire, is linked to Saltaire village via a footbridge over the River Aire at the bottom of Victoria Road.
A family picnic area and children's playground are sited at the main entrance. Close by is the park lodge marked by its Italianate design, it sits serenely at the park gates. The lodge is grade 2 listed and was renovated in 2009, courtesy of £3.2m Heritage Lottery funding for the parks restoration. Three beautifully restored shelters overlook the eastern, western and northern aspects. Central to the park is the newly constructed bandstand with Low Moor Cannons located along a tree lined promenade with access to the Half Moon Pavilion. The popular Half Moon Café is located beneath the pavilion, here visitors can relax, take in the beautiful setting and enjoy the panoramic views of the cricket ground.
Saltaire Cricket Club sits within the 5.5 hectares of park ground and takes up approximately a quarter of the park. Founded in 1869, it still has an active membership today.
The park hosts many popular events throughout the year such as World Heritage Day, Saltaire Festival, Dragon Boat Races and bandstand performances.
Accolades Green Flag Award and Yorkshire in Bloom Platinum award.
