'A wild, wick slip she was': Children in the Brontës' writing.
The Brontë sisters create vivid and memorable portraits of childhood in their writing. They touch on notions of childhood that include the Romantic idea of lost freedom and innocence in Wuthering Heights, and the child as victim of adult hypocrisy and cruelty in Charlotte’s creation of Jane Eyre. This talk explores these ideas and focusses on Anne’s take on childhood in particular, and asks the question, is Agnes Grey saintly in her patience towards her unruly charges, or does her treatment of them reflect some of the harsher, more judgemental beliefs of her time?
