Commemorating WW1

Centenary Events across Bradford

During the year there are numerous events across Bradford to commemorate battle actions and anniversaries on the WW1 battlefields of the Western Front.

WW1 Art Commissions.  Extraordinary arts experiences connecting people with the First World War.  The artist Imran Qureshi has been commissioned to provide two artworks, one in the Moghul Gardens at Cartwright Hall and one in City Park, in May 2016. The project has been made possible with the partnerships of 14 18 NOW and The Yorkshire Festival.

Did you know!  Bradford Industrial Museum Moorside Mills Clock Tower was built as a First World War memorial. Commissioned by the owner of the time Clifford Wilson, the clock tower was added to the building in 1919 and then officially opened on Tuesday 16 December of the same year. In March 2015 it was fully restored and interpretation panels positioned near the tower.

2016 will see a reinterpretation of the imposing sculpture ‘Humanity Overcoming War’ WWI memorial on permanent display in the Sculpture Court at Cartwright Hall, by Francis Derwent Wood. Derwent Wood worked as a volunteer in the hospital wards constructing masks of thin metal, sculpted to match the portraits of the men in their pre-war normality providing each injured soldier with a renewed self-confidence, even self-respect.

Cartwight Hall ‘Picture in Focus 2016’ will be a work from the permanent collections by Charles Sims RA, depicting the loss of his only son, the catalyst which drove him into a decline in his mental health, change in his artistic work and eventually ending in suicide. The work will be displayed after restoration as part of the WW1 centenary and will provide a talking point for attitudes towards mental illness brought on by experiences of modern warfare.
