1 – National Media Museum

This vibrant and interactive museum is perfect for young visitors, as there is so much to see and do. Younger children will love the Magic Factory, which explores the science behind media in a hands-on and colourful way. Gamers young and old will be hooked by the retro arcade games in the Games Lounge, and children of all ages will find something to enjoy in Experience TV and Animation Gallery. There are often child-friendly exhibitions in the school holidays so check the website to see what's on. The National Media Museum is free and open daily 10.00-18.00.

2 – St Ives Estate, Harden

On a sunny day there's nothing better than the great outdoors, and St Ives Estate has lots on offer for families. It boasts an adventure playground which beautifully fuses climbing frames, slides and other equipment with natural features such as rocks and sand to provide a great play experience for all ages and abilities. If you decide you need a break from playing there's a wooden sculpture trail to explore in the woods, a duck feeding platform at Coppice Pond and a great café. The Estate is free and always open, and the café is open daily 10.00-16.30.

3 – Keighley and Worth Valley Railway

Is there such thing as a child who doesn't like trains?! Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is a great family day out for train lovers. Buy a Rover ticket and you can hop on and off the vintage steam and diesel trains as often as you like to explore the stations along the route, including Oakworth station where The Railway Children was filmed and Ingrow West which is home to the Museum of Railway Travel and Ingrow Loco. Themed events happen throughout the year including the very popular Santa Steam Specials in the run up to Christmas, so check the website to see what's on when you wish to visit. A Rover ticket costs £16 for adults and £8 for children aged 5-15 (under 5s are free) and timetable information can be found on the website.

4 – Bradford Industrial Museum

Another great place for young transport enthusiasts to visit is the Bradford Industrial Museum. The Transport Gallery on the ground floor boasts an impressive display of vintage cars, motorbikes, trams and an impressive steam locomotive. But it's not just travel lovers who will enjoy this museum – there are also several galleries devoted to various industrial equipment, many of which can be seen working in regular demonstrations. Children who are learning about Victorian times or the Second World War will be fascinated by the back-to-back terrace houses rebuilt in 1870's, 1940's and 1950's style. The museum is free and open 10.00-16.00 Tuesday to Friday, 11.00-16.00 Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays.

5 – Saltaire Village

Bradford's industrial past has also provided it with a UNESCO World Heritage Site on its doorstep! Saltaire Village, purpose built by mill owner Titus Salt to provide decent living conditions for his workers, is now a thriving community with a strong interest in the arts. Roberts Park is great for families, with a playground and skate park, a bandstand with regular afternoon concerts and lovely grounds. Salts Mill is a popular attraction too, particularly the art galleries, the huge book shop which includes a selection of beautiful children's books and the family-friendly Salts Diner. Roberts Park is always open, and Salts Mill is open 10.00-17.30 Monday to Friday, 10.00-18.00 Saturday and Sunday and is free to enter.
