A Painting of a woman at a table

About

Join us for a remarkable exhibition featuring the works of Dudley Edwards, an artist who emerged as a prominent figure in the vibrant Swinging Sixties alongside Douglas Binder. Many say that they created ‘the look’ of the era.

This exhibition, presented for the very first time at Ilkley Manor House, showcases a collection that has evolved and transformed over decades, reflecting the artist’s unwavering dedication to his craft.

Dudley and Douglas’ initial acclaim came from a mural commissioned for Expo 67 in Montreal. Pioneers in various areas, they excelled in:

Customised cars, exemplified by Tara Brown’s Cobra, showcased at the Robert Fraser Gallery alongside their preliminary gouaches,

Painted furniture, including the iconic ‘Magic Piano’ for Paul McCartney,

Building façades, such as Wolf Olins’ studio, Lord John’s boutique on Carnaby Street, and The Flying Dragon Tea House on Kings Road.

Dudley Edwards continued to leave his mark, painting murals in the homes of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. In fact, a quote in Il Fatto Quotidiano states,

“The great John Lennon spent many hours at the home of Paul McCartney, sitting admiring the murals painted by Dudley Edwards.”

Dudley Edwards has been a guest speaker at esteemed institutions like The Royal College of Art, The Commonwealth Institute, and various universities in Australia, India, and Ireland. He was even a consultant on Michael Caine’s film ‘My Generation.’

His artwork has graced renowned institutions worldwide, including The Whitney Museum of Art in New York, Musée d’histoire contemporaine in Paris, Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, and the V&A in London. His paintings grace numerous public and private collections.

Dudley’s primary artistic influences stem from the early 1900s French artists, including Picasso, Matisse, Bonnard, Cezanne, Degas, Monet, Modigliani, and Seurat.
