The paupers' graveyard (closed in 1969) which belonged to High Royds Psychiatric Hospital (closed in 2003) was restored in 2011 to create a tranquil garden of remembrance.

The Heritage Chapel, which contains details of the 2861 people who are buried there, remembers those who have gone before and helps with the campaign to remove the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health.

Its loving restoration has created an oasis of peace and a special Thanksgiving service will be held to commemorate the restoration and those who have gone before.

An additional feature, which has been added, is the restoration and replacement of a bronze memorial plaque featuring the names of the members of High Royds staff who gave their their lives WWI and WWII.

This is enhanced by a display of an original Tower of London poppy which made such a national impact. The Memorial Garden has been described as "an absolute Gem" by Yorkshire in Bloom and this year 2017 has been honoured by the Duke of York with a Community Initiative award.
