A day trip option is to visit the nearby Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, which has a collection of 19th and 20th century British art, contemporary prints, and South Asian art.  Then, stretch your legs in Lister Park, admire the Mughal Water Garden, and spend some time sketching before lunch.
